Minehead, Somerset

​Minehead is a vibrant coastal town in Somerset, home to just over 12,000 residents and a gateway to the stunning landscapes of Exmoor National Park. Known for its sweeping beach, historic harbour and the famous West Somerset Railway, Minehead blends seaside charm with a strong sense of community.
The town is governed by Minehead Town Council, established in 1983, which works alongside Somerset Council to deliver local services. Local government here has evolved over time: Minehead was part of the West Somerset district from 1974, which later became Somerset West and Taunton in 2019. On 1 April 2023, a major change brought all district councils together under a single authority—Somerset Council—combining services previously managed by Mendip, Sedgemoor, Somerset West & Taunton and South Somerset, along with those of Somerset County Council.
As part of this process, several key open spaces and play areas were devolved to Minehead Town Council, giving local people greater influence over how these cherished areas are maintained and improved. These spaces are now managed locally to reflect the needs and character of our community.
This new structure aims to simplify local governance and ensure services are delivered more efficiently, while Minehead Town Council continues to focus on the things that matter most, our open spaces, amenities and local identity.

Minehead is split into 5 wards - Alcombe North Ward, Alcombe South Ward, Minehead Central Ward, Minehead North Ward and Periton & Woodcombe Ward. The full council consists of 16 councillors who represent these wards.
